Spiced Brilliance!

Every so often you come across a gin that has that “little something” that makes it different from many others. Opihr (pronounced oh-peer) is one such gin. Made in the UK, but featuring exotic ingredients sourced from many parts of the world -including Asia, of course-, this particular spiced gin is unique and surprisingly reasonably priced.

Opihr + Fever Tree Tonic Water + Ginger

Ruby and gold opulence!

After doing a bit of research on the web, it seems this gin is best taken with Fever Tree tonic water and some ginger. I remember my own surprise when hearing about ginger being used again, especially after sampling it in a G&T at our local Vietnamese restaurant -as explained in this blog entry. I was a little hesitant to add this ingredient to Opihr at first, but I can see why it’s suggested by its producers. Ginger, being a somewhat warm and flavourful ingredient, helps to amplify the spicy nature of Opihr. If I was being completely honest, I would say that ginger adds a degree of completeness to the whole mix and rounds the G&T off nicely.

In contrast, having tried another spiced gin called GOA some years ago -which left me unimpressed with the overall flavour it offered-, I am so thankful Opihr didn’t work out the same way.

Opihr + Fentimans Tonic Water + Orange + Cloves

Here’s a cool tip to prevent the cloves from getting in your mouth while enjoying this drink: pin them to the slice of orange!

Aside from ginger, Opihr’s makers suggest alternative ingredients to try when consuming their gin: orange and cloves in particular. I tried them both as well with Fentimans tonic water and found the G&T was even better! The cloves worked wonderfully with the gin’s spicy elements and the orange complemented the citrus notes perfectly! This is by far my favourite combination out of the two options.
